The Friday Morning Listen: Tori Amos – Crucify EP (1992)

Right about this time every year, somebody steps on the accelerator and we rocket toward the new year. The holidays can be quite hectic, which I’m pretty sure adds to that feeling of the uncontrolled passage of time. This time around, me and TheWife™ spent a very quiet day at our new locale on the coast of Maine. No visitors. No big doings. A couple of pies were baked, some (insanely wet & heavy) snow was shoveled (the first “big” snow of the year came last night), and a little housework got done. No Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. No football. No ads for Black Friday sales. Best of all, it was a very slow day.

I don’t usually spend a lot of time coming up with lists of stuff I’m thankful for. I’m not going to do that here either. It’s just not me. Given that so many of my moments of joy come from the discovery of music, you might think that I take the rest of my existence (the people in particular) for granted. Not true at all. It’s just that I tend to keep quiet about it. OK, I tend to keep quiet about all sorts of things.

Despite the ongoing collapse of the physical entertainment products market (books, videos, CDs, etc), this has been a year that was just brimming with terrific new music. Cynics out there will say that if people can’t make any money from their art then they will cease to make it. Wrong. The impetus to make art has nothing to do with money. It never did. That is what I’m thankful for.

P.S. I’m thankful for Tori’s beautiful voice

P.P.S. I’m thankful that I got to meet her. She called me an audiophile!

P.P.P. S. How many shopping days ’til Christmas?
